LODOVICI, Francesco de (XVI secolo) - Triomphi di Carlo. Venice: Matteo Pasini e Francesco Bindoni, 1535. First and only edition of this chivalrous novel that celebrates the victories of Charlemagne and his paladins in one hundred songs, and which appeared in two slightly different editions: one with a dedication to Doge Gritti [the present one], the other with the title within a large woodcut border and with, on the verso, the index table. The poem, full of amazing adventures and "delightful jokes", stands out from tradition because it is composed in the third and not in the octave rhyme (Essling III, 664). 4to (200 x 146mm). Large woodcut device on title depicting the author with the Doge Andrea Gritti, dedicatee of the work, text in italics on two columns (title slightly cropped with small restorations to the margin, other leaves slightly cropped, occasional slight staining and soiling). Later diced calf decorated in gilt (back panel detached, some general restoration and rubbing).
