HITTORFF, Jacques Ignace (1792-1867); ZANTH, Karl Ludwig Wilhelm (1796-1857) - Architecture Antique de la Sicile ou Recueil des plus interessans monumens. Paris: Hittorff, Renouard, bance ainè, [1827-1829]. Rare work by Hittorff that documents the excavation carried out at Selinunte in 1823 and the discovery of traces of polychrome pigments on the friezes of the temples. The discovery, documented in this work, had a fundamental impact on the vision of classicism and refuted the thinking of Winckelmann and Canova who wanted classical art to be dominated by a rigorous rejection of colour. . Elephant folio (615 x 440mm). 48 loose plates (of 49, lacking plate 2, plate one was never published) of which 5 are coloured (some foxing and tears at the edges of the plates, pencil notes in the margin written as a captions). 2 (of 8) original printed wrappers preserved, all within a contemporary half cloth folder with laces (some wear).
