BARBAULT, Jean (c.1705-1766) - Les plus beaux Monuments de Rome ancienne ou Recueil des plus beaux Morceaux de l'Antiquité romaine qui existent encore. Rome: Bouchard et Gravier, 1761. A good copy of the first edition of this iconographic collection dedicated to the city of Rome. Jean Barbault was a collaborator and subsequently a rival of Piranesi. "Les monuments" is his first and most important work, engraved with the help of Domenico Montagu. Elephant folio (528 x 390mm). Half-title, allegorical architectural vignette on title, engraved headpiece with the arms of the dedicatee, elegantly executed tailpieces, 73 finely engraved plates (some occasional light staining and foxing, small restoration to S2). Contemporary half calf over marbled plates, spine decorated in gilt (extremities lightly rubbed).
