RICCATI, Vincenzo (1707-1775) - Dialogo, dove ne' Congressi di più giornate delle forze vive e dell'azioni delle forze morte si tien discorso. Bologna: Lelio dalla volpe, 1749. First edition of this treatise by the Jesuit Vincenzo Riccati, one of the greatest mathematicians of the time. He dealt with differentiated equations, but he is remembered above all for his studies on hyperbolic functions whose fundamental properties he indicated. With this work he entered the controversy between the followers of Descartes and Leibniz, regarding the evaluation of the "living force" and the "dead force" of bodies. 4to (250 x 184mm). Printer's device with a fox on title, 11 engraved folding plates, engraved headpiece, with final blank (some foxing to first leaves). Contemporary vellum, title on spine label, red speckled edges (slightly bowed). Provenance: Francesco Ginazizi? (ownership inscription dated 1749 on title).
