[GASTRONOMIA] - CATONE, Marco Porcio (ca. 234 a.C. - 149) e altri. - Libri de re Rustica. [Zurich: Martin de Keyser], 1528. An interesting compendium of treatises on agriculture and wine production by the four Roman writers Cato, Varrone, Columella and Palladio. The first is Cato's treatise, the only work by the author to survive intact, and it offers management advice to the owner of the middle-class estate, including on the ownership of slaves, and the manufacture of wine and olive oil. The second is that of Marcus Terentius Varro; it deals with agriculture in general, the breeding of cattle and sheep, and the management of smaller farm animals. Next is Columella who examines equipment, field areas and seed-sowing patterns; with occasional references to the work of Cato and Varro, he offers advice on gardens, agricultural and livestock management, calendars and soil. Finally Palladius, whose treatise is closely modelled on that of Collumella. 8vo (149 x 97mm). Woodcut headpieces (some occasional browning, slight staining, a small restoration to the corner of 2Z2). Modern binding backed in leather, 18th-century calf plates, red edges, marbled endpapers (restorations), preserved in an elegant modern case. Provenance: few early annotations - E. Richmond Swales (ownership inscription).
