First edition of this important collection of scientific memoirs and Galilean letters, which includes the Treaty on fortification in the original edition. Two of the plates depict the title of the first edition of the "Saggiatore" and the "Dialogo". The first volume describes the life of Galileo from 1587 to 1616, the second from 1616 until the year of his death 1642. 2 volumes, 8vo (270 x 196mm). Engraved portrait of the author as frontispiece in both volumes, 8 engraved plates, folding and numbered I-VIII and 4 other engraved and unnumbered plates (some light spotting and browning). Contemporary half vellum over marbled paper boards, spines decorated in gilt with dark leather label (extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: Bibl. Gust. C. Galletti Flor.
